Looking Up - A human being's vision is most compromised in the up direction - you have to move your head to see anything much that is above your immediate eyeline. Hiding on the ceiling only works if people are close to directly below you however.

And the whole 'vent' idea is true. In just about EVERY video game, movie, TV Series, whatever, there is at least ONE scene where someone's in a vent.

And in Mirror's Edge, Faith hides in HUNDREDS of vents*brick'd*.
